- The discovery of Philipp’s II of Macedon and his grandson’s, Alexander IV, unlooted tombs in 1977-78 made headlines all over the world.
- Philipp’s II 24-karat gold larnax (ash-chest) weights approximately 8 kg. His priceless golden wreath is consisted of 313 oak leaves and 68 acorns.
- The Sun of Vergina on Philip’s larnax has 16 rays: the 4 represent the 4 elements and the remaining the 12 Olympian Gods.
- Aigai means goats: a herd of goats indicated the exact site upon which the town was build, says the legend.
- The best preserved Ancient Greek mural painting (350BC), depicting the Abduction of Persephone, was found in a smaller royal tomb.
- The palace of Aigai, with its pioneering architecture design, is considered as important edifice as the Parthenon.
- In the palace of Aigai Euripides wrote and presented his last tragedies, and Aristotle taught Alexander the Great.
- In the necropolis are more than 500 tombs, dated back to 11c. B.C.
